Development of an optimal non-noble metal, mesoporous carbon electrocatalyst and design of cathodic half-cell for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction to H2O2

Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR) is revolutionizing hydrogen peroxide production by developing an eco-friendly electrochemical process as part of the Power2Hype project. Focusing on non-noble metal catalysts with high efficiencies, WFBR has achieved a 90% faradaic efficiency and is advancing to larger-scale tests. The work promises a more sustainable and energy-efficient method for producing high-purity hydrogen peroxide using green electricity.

Demonstration of H2O2 Electrosynthesis at Pilot Scale

The primary objective of WP6 is to conduct a mid-scale pilot study to assess the feasibility, time, costs and scalability factors for the proper design and implementation of a full-scale commercial electrolytic hydrogen peroxide production process. The facility will be located at a Solvay site and is anticipated to have a production capacity of several kg of H2O2 per day with product concentrations ranging from diluted to 99%.

Pilot plant development for the next generation of H2O2 production using water, air, and green energy in a novel electrolyser and concentrator system

In Power2Hype we aim to establish a sustainable route for the hydrogen peroxide production. Based on air and water as feedstocks, and renewable energy as the sole energy source, the Power2Hype route addresses an economically viable and green alternative to the classical energy-demanding anthraquinone process

Water, air, and renewable energy are the sole resources for future H2O2 production, utilizing a novel electrolyser and concentrator technology

In Power2Hype, our goal is to replace the energy- and resource-intensive anthraquinone process for hydrogen peroxide production with an environmentally friendly electrolysis process. This innovative approach requires only water, air and green electricity to produce this chemical. The key lies in a new tandem electrolysis, which maximizes electricity usage, along with an innovative electrolyser and concentrator technology.

Towards paired electrolysis by integration of the anodic and cathodic production of hydrogen peroxide

Power2Hype aims to use energy cost-effectively by utilizing electrons twice for the production of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide production is thus targeted at the cathode as well as the anode in a so-called paired 200% electrolyzer. WP3 deals with developing and efficiently coupling anodic and cathodic reactions to achieve an optimal convergent paired electrolysis for H2O2 production. Main partners contributing to this Work Package are Fraunhofer IGB (FH-IGB), Wageningen Food and Bio-based Research (WR) and Solvay

Advanced Materials for electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide

The vision of Power2Hype (P2H) is to establish a novel technology for producing hydrogen peroxide on industrial scale using a tandem electrolysis concept (electrochemical conversion to the desired product on both electrodes).
