Pioneering Carbon-Neutral H2O2 Production – It is Time to Design and Build the Test Unit
Solvay, in collaboration with its eleven consortium partners, proudly takes part in the Power2Hype project. This innovative initiative aims to revolutionise hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production by demonstrating a pilot unit capable of achieving a carbon-neutral footprint, significantly enhancing the environmental benefits of this essential chemical. After a year and a half of rigorous development, the project has now advanced to a critical phase with the design and construction of the pilot plant stack in work package 5 (WP5) underway.
Solvay’s Expertise in Safe and Sustainable H2O2 Management
Solvay’s expertise in safe and sustainable H2O2 management is crucial for evaluating the electrolytic hydrogen peroxide production test unit, which will be developed in WP5. Our unparalleled proficiency in hydrogen peroxide solutions, backed by a comprehensive portfolio that includes some of the purest H2O2 grades globally, positions us as a leader in this field. Our commitment to safety and sustainability is evident in our robust product life cycle management programs, ensuring the safe transportation, handling, and use of hydrogen peroxide. With 19 industrial sites and three research and innovation centres worldwide, Solvay’s infrastructure supports the effective and sustainable management of H2O2.
Power2Hype Project Objectives
The Power2Hype project aims to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and scalability of a full-scale commercial electrolytic hydrogen peroxide production process. The pilot plant, designed to produce up to 20 kg/day of H2O2, will leverage commercially available, pre-tested equipment to prove the viability of this new technology.
Key Tasks and Deliverables
Solvay will perform a comprehensive evaluation of safety risks, design, and procedural hazards associated with the system (WP6). Once the system is developed and built, the commissioning of the demonstration unit will take place at Solvay’s site, running the unit for an extended period of time to test the system’s robustness, product quality, and component longevity.
Additionally, the unit will undergo testing under varying electrical grid loads to gather data for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA).
A Sustainable Future with Power2Hype
The Power2Hype project underscores the innovative spirit and commitment to sustainability of Solvay and its consortium members. By pioneering carbon-neutral hydrogen peroxide production, Solvay aims to set new standards in the chemical industry, contributing to a
greener future for all.
